Tax returnsHow do I start my first tax return?

Gather income statements, bank interest details and work-expense records for the income year. Use the checklist to organise them, then prepare your return in the official myTax service through myGov linked to the ATO.

Start the tax checklist
Tax returnsWhat does "Tax ready" mean?

It means your employer has finalised your income statement for that year. The ATO advises waiting for this status before using the statement in your return; check every employer because information can appear before it is final.

Prepare your records checklist
Tax returnsDoes a deduction mean I get that amount back?

A deduction generally reduces the income on which tax is calculated. Your refund or bill depends on the whole return and tax already paid, so a deduction is not a dollar-for-dollar refund.

For exampleA hypothetical $100 eligible deduction reduces taxable income by $100. It does not promise a $100 refund.

Read the tax checklist guidance
Tax returnsCan I claim clothes my employer tells me to wear?

A dress code alone does not make everyday clothes deductible. Ordinary trousers or shirts remain private clothing; qualifying uniforms, occupation-specific clothing and protective clothing have separate rules.

For exampleSeparate an ordinary pair of black trousers from a compulsory branded uniform shirt before checking the ATO categories.

Tax returnsCan I claim travel from home to my usual workplace?

Normal travel between home and a regular workplace is generally private. Travel between workplaces can have different rules, so record the journey and its work purpose before checking the relevant ATO guidance.

For exampleHome to your usual store and travel from that store to another workplace during work are different journeys to check.

Tax returnsHow do I separate work and private phone use?

Use bills and usage records to support the share connected with your work duties. Separate private use, reimbursements and any handset cost; a whole phone bill is not automatically a work expense. Do not count usage again if it is already covered by your working-from-home fixed-rate claim.

For exampleFor a hypothetical $80 service bill, a supported 25% work share is $20 of cost to review, before reimbursements or other rules.

Read the phone expense source
Tax returnsWhat if my employer paid me back for an expense?

You cannot claim the part an employer reimburses. Keep the repayment details with your expense record and check whether any remaining work-related cost meets the deduction rules.

For exampleA hypothetical $50 work cost with $20 reimbursed leaves $30 to review. The remaining amount is not automatically deductible.

Organise an expense to review
Tax returnsWhat records should I keep for work expenses?

Keep receipts or other required evidence showing what you bought, the supplier, amount and date. Also keep your work purpose, work-use calculation and reimbursement details so you can explain the amount you report.

Read the ATO records source
Tax returnsCan I put the Howloop expense total straight into myTax?

The total is a list of costs to review, not an approved deduction. Check each item and the rules for your income year before entering amounts in the appropriate myTax sections; some items may have no deduction or need a different calculation.

Tax returnsDoes Howloop lodge my tax return?

Howloop helps you prepare a checklist and organise expenses. It cannot access your ATO account or submit a return; you review and lodge through the official service yourself or use a registered tax agent.

SavingsWhat is compound interest?

When interest is added to your savings, that interest can earn interest too. The result depends on your balance, rate, time and deposits; a projection assumes the inputs hold.

Try the compound interest calculator
SavingsWill I always earn the advertised savings rate?

A bonus rate may depend on deposits, balance changes or other account conditions. A welcome rate lasts only for its stated period, so check the ongoing rate, fees and current provider terms as well.

Compare rate conditions in a worked example
SavingsAre the bank rates on Howloop live?

The bank explorer uses dated snapshots of public product data. Check each product’s retrieval date and confirm the current offer with the provider; the listing does not assess whether you qualify.

Explore the dated savings products
SavingsHow much do I need to save each month?

Enter your target, starting savings and timeframe in the savings-goal calculator. It estimates the end-of-month contribution using a constant rate; try a lower rate too, and include costs that your target needs to cover.

For exampleAt zero interest, a hypothetical $6,000 gap over 12 months needs $500 each month.

Calculate a monthly savings goal
SavingsHow do I set an emergency-fund target?

Add up essential monthly expenses and choose how many months you want covered. Use your own bills and income circumstances; the calculator’s example is a starting point for comparison, not a personal recommendation.

Build an emergency-fund estimate
Home loansDoes an offset account reduce what I owe?

Money in a full offset reduces the loan balance used to calculate interest. Your debt remains separate from the offset cash, and spending that cash reduces the interest benefit.

For exampleA hypothetical $500,000 loan with $30,000 in a full offset is charged interest on $470,000. The debt is still $500,000.

Explore a mortgage and offset scenario
Home loansHow is an offset different from extra repayments?

Offset money stays in a separate account linked to the loan. An extra repayment goes into the loan and reduces the debt; getting it back through redraw depends on the lender’s terms.

Read the offset and extra-repayment guide
Home loansIs an offset always worth its extra cost?

Compare the interest avoided with any higher loan rate and additional fees. Use the balance you normally keep in the offset, because a high balance on payday can overstate the benefit.

Try the offset cost comparison
Home loansWhat does LVR mean?

Loan-to-value ratio is the loan divided by the property value accepted by the lender, expressed as a percentage. A different valuation or costs added to the loan can change it.

For exampleA hypothetical $480,000 loan divided by a $600,000 lender valuation gives an 80% LVR.

Calculate your deposit and LVR
Home loansDoes a deposit or LVR result mean a lender will approve me?

Lenders also check income, expenses, debts and other application details. Howloop’s LVR calculator shows the borrowing share only; it does not approve a loan, quote mortgage insurance or decide scheme eligibility.

Pay & superWhat is the difference between gross and take-home pay?

Gross pay is cash pay before tax withholding and other deductions. Take-home pay is what remains for your bank account; employer super is shown separately.

Estimate your take-home pay
Pay & superIs a salary including super the same as salary plus super?

Including super means the quoted package contains both cash salary and employer super. Plus super means the employer contribution is added to the quoted cash salary; ask for the two dollar amounts separately.

For exampleWith an assumed flat 12% employer contribution and no other benefits, an $84,000 package splits into $75,000 cash salary and $9,000 super, before tax.

Compare including-super and plus-super offers
Pay & superWhy is employer super separate from my bank deposit?

Employer super goes into your super account for retirement, where the fund invests it. Howloop displays that contribution separately from estimated take-home pay; the displayed contribution is not your fund’s after-tax balance.

Learn what your super does
Pay & superIs fortnightly pay half of monthly pay?

A fortnight is two weeks, so the calculator uses 26 fortnightly periods and 12 monthly periods per year. Two fortnightly pays cover four weeks, which is shorter than an average calendar month.

For exampleA hypothetical $2,000 per fortnight is $52,000 over 26 pays, or about $4,333 a month on average.

Compare pay periods
Pay & superWhy might the pay estimate differ from my payslip or tax bill?

The calculator estimates regular pay within its stated payroll settings. Rounding, bonuses, salary sacrifice and personal tax circumstances can change the result; your annual tax assessment also uses the whole return.

Check the pay calculator’s scope and sources
Using HowloopDo I need an account or paid AI to use these tools?

The calculators, tax checklist and quick answers are free to use without an account. Quick answers use pre-written explanations, so browsing them does not need a paid AI service.

Find a calculator or guide
Using HowloopWhere do my calculator numbers and tax entries go?

Calculator arithmetic and the tax checklist run in your browser. Their amounts are not sent to Howloop or a bank; the tax checklist does not send entries to the ATO or an AI service.

Read how inputs and saved drafts are handled
Using HowloopCan I save my tax checklist and return later?

Choose "Save on this device" to keep a draft in this browser, then use "Restore saved checklist" when you return. Changes are not saved automatically, and anyone using the same browser profile may be able to restore the draft.

Open the tax checklist
Using HowloopCan Howloop tell me which account, loan or deduction is right for me?

The tools explain concepts and compare the assumptions you enter. They do not assess your full circumstances, recommend a personal product or approve deductions; use the linked official guidance and check the relevant provider’s terms.
