Tap water in a hard-water area carries dissolved calcium and magnesium. When you boil it, some of that water leaves as steam and the minerals it was carrying have nowhere to go, so they come out of solution and deposit on the hottest surface — the element. Over months it builds into a crust.
That crust is a genuinely good insulator. The element now has to heat through a layer of rock before it can heat the water, so it stays on longer, uses more electricity, and eventually runs hot enough to fail early. A furred kettle can take noticeably longer to boil than a clean one.
The good news is that limescale dissolves in weak acid, and you almost certainly have some in the cupboard.
Dissolving limescale off a kettle element
Step 1 Look at the element The chalky white or grey crust on the base and lower walls is limescale — calcium carbonate deposited from hard water every time it boils. It insulates the element, so the kettle draws power for longer to reach the same temperature.
Step 2 Fill it half vinegar, half water Enough to cover the scale, and no more than the maximum fill line. Plain white vinegar is ideal. Citric acid works too — a couple of tablespoons in a full kettle of water — and smells far better.
Step 3 Boil it, then leave it alone Bring it to the boil once, switch it off, and let it stand for around thirty minutes. Heat starts the reaction and the soak finishes it. Do not repeatedly re-boil; that does not speed it up.
Step 4 Pour it out and wipe gently The crust will have softened and lifted. A soft sponge takes off what remains. Never scrape or use anything abrasive — scratching the element gives new scale more surface to grip and makes the problem return faster.
Step 5 Rinse, then boil clean water twice Two full boils of fresh water, discarded each time. This clears the last of the acid and the smell. Then your kettle boils at full speed again.
The mix
White vinegar and water, roughly half and half. Enough to cover the scale, never above the maximum fill line.
That’s it. Commercial kettle descalers are mostly citric or sulfamic acid at a similar working strength, sold at several times the price.
Citric acid is the upgrade if you want one. Two tablespoons of the powder in a kettle of water works faster than vinegar and leaves no smell at all — which, if you’ve ever descaled with vinegar on a warm day, is worth something. It’s sold cheaply as a baking or preserving ingredient.
Lemon juice works too, on the same chemistry, but you need a lot of lemons to match a splash of vinegar.
Boil once, then wait
Bring it to the boil, switch it off, and walk away for about thirty minutes.
The heat gets the reaction going quickly; the soak is what actually does the work. You may hear faint fizzing — that’s carbon dioxide coming off as the acid converts the carbonate. It’s the reaction working.
Re-boiling it repeatedly doesn’t speed anything up and just wastes electricity. Once, then wait.
For a badly furred kettle, leave it an hour or two, or overnight. Time costs nothing.
Pouring out and wiping
Tip the solution away and look inside. The crust should be soft, loose, or gone entirely. Wipe the base and lower walls with a soft sponge or cloth and it comes away.
Do not scrape. No wire wool, no scourers, no knives. Scratching the element creates a rougher surface, and rough surfaces give new scale far more to grip onto — so an aggressive clean today means faster rebuild for the rest of the kettle’s life. If it doesn’t wipe off easily, it needs another soak, not more force.
The rinse matters
Two full boils of fresh water, poured away each time. Then a cold rinse.
Skip this and your first cup of tea tastes like a chip shop. Two boils reliably clears it; one usually doesn’t.
Keeping it clear
- Only boil what you need. Less water boiled means less scale deposited. It also saves electricity, which is the point at which this stops being about the kettle.
- Empty it after use. Water left standing overnight deposits minerals as it cools.
- A stainless steel descaling ball sitting in the kettle attracts scale onto itself instead of the element. They’re a few pounds and genuinely work.
- A filter jug reduces hardness before the water ever reaches the kettle, which helps the coffee machine and the iron too.
None of these stop scale entirely in a hard-water area. They just stretch the gap between descales from one month to three.

Questions people actually ask
How often should I descale?
In a hard water area, monthly. In a soft water area, every three to six months is plenty. The honest answer is to look inside — when you can see a crust forming on the element, it is time, and doing it early means it comes off in one go rather than needing several rounds.
Is limescale actually bad for me?
No. It is calcium and magnesium carbonate, which are harmless to drink and are simply the minerals that were dissolved in your tap water. The problem is mechanical, not medical: scale insulates the element, so the kettle uses more energy and takes longer, and eventually the element fails early.
Vinegar or citric acid?

Can I use lemon juice?
