There are four completely different ways to apply for a Tax File Number. Here they all are, side by side — pick who you are and the rest fade out, or read all four.

Work out your route

Which TFN application is yours?

Tap who you are and the other lanes fade out — but you can always see the whole picture, including the ones that aren't yours.

Who are you?

Australian resident without a Digital ID Someone checks your ID in person, or by certified post

  • Certified copies For the postal channel only — never send originals.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants who can’t provide enough identity documents can use form NAT 1589 instead — a referee completes the proof-of-identity reference.

How long

Up to 28 days Counted from when your documents were sighted, or received by post.

What arrives

Letter in the post Say on the form if you want it shared with Centrelink.

What you do

  • Check you actually need one — interest, dividends or royalties alone usually don't require a TFN

  • Get your ID documents certified, then post everything together

How long

Up to 28 days after it arrives Plus international post time in both directions.

What arrives

Letter in the post To the address on your form.
Once you have it, guard it

Only your employer (after you start work), your bank, your super fund and a registered tax agent ever need your TFN. Never put it on a resume. The ATO will never text or email you a link asking you to log in, and will never ask for payment by gift card.

Howloop guides are general advice for common problems. If something about your situation looks different from the animation — a smell of gas, water near electrics, an injury — stop and get a professional.
